WEST WREXHAM PARTNERSHIP
The West Wrexham Partnership is a newly formed group which is made up of residents from Coedpoeth, Brymbo, Tanyfron, Caego, Pentre Broughton, Moss, Gwersyllt, New Broughton, Brynteg, Bradley, Summerhill, Lodge, Southsea, Rhosrobin and Llay. The Partnership aims to support the regeneration of the west Wrexham communities by making applications for funding for community led projects and help to develop and organise community led projects and activities. The Partnership’s “Community Transport” working group have recently set-up the West Wheels Community Link Scheme which was officially launched in April 2008 and the Partnership also focus on Community Learning, Health & Well-Being, Children & Young People and Heritage.
The Partnership works closely with the Community Development Team employed by Wrexham County Borough Council. They also work with local residents and local community groups to help them improve their lives, this may be by helping people access training or employment, learn something new, or to improve the surroundings in which they live. The team are able to assist community groups to search for and gain funding, assist with advertising, to gain new members, as well as providing support and advice to groups and individuals.
Some examples of the work the team have undertaken and achieved by working with local community groups and residents are listed below:-
- With assistance from Brymbo W.I, Brymbo Heritage Group and local residents, the team assisted with the International Womens Day event held in St Marys School, Brymbo in March 2008
- Brymbo Pool Development - funding has been secured from Welsh Assembly Government and Environment Agency to develop the area around the pool by upgrading footpaths, disabled fishing platforms and installing seats and benches to create an area where the residents of Brymbo can enjoy. The team have worked alongside the Brymbo Angling Club to help with the planning of this project. Work is anticipated to start on site early Summer 2008.
- Development of Dragons Daycare, Tanyfron –Dragon’s Daycare is currently supported by the community development team to identify and apply for grant funding and to market and publicise the services they offer locally. Recently the community development team has supported the management committee in developing their policies and procedures and compiling a parent/carer handbook as well as writing and submitting applications for funding.
- Llay Community Centre – work is nearly complete to improve the facilities at Llay Community Centre. The works have seen the installation of new double glazed windows and doors, a new disabled access ramp into the building and the re-location and enhancement of the disabled toilet facilities. Funding was secured from WREN (Landfill Tax Fund) and Llay Community Council by the Community Centre Management Committee with support from the Community Development Team.
- Little Rascals Playgroup has been awarded £3206 to assist with them being set-up within the new Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre on Second Avenue from the lottery-funded grants programme “Awards for All Wales”, the application was supported by the Community Development Team who will continue to work with the playgroup to increase activity and usage. The grant will enable the purchase of new educational toys, equipment and assist with room hire costs until the Playgroup becomes self-sustaining in approximately 6 months. The grant will also help promote the playgroup throughout the area and surrounding villages.
- The Community Development Team are currently working with the Ranger at Nant Mill to assist in setting up the “Friends of Nant Mill” group, which will enable them to apply for grant funding to assist with potential projects at the park.
